Anisa: Why Horseracing Is So Well-liked ? Recreation and Sports ...

Sports are excellent, and engaging in it not only helps to reinvigorate the body but the mind as well. Indeed engaging in sports offers a lot of advantages. It can reduce stress and might often even help cure some types of illness. A lot of people nowadays are residing in a busy world and will work tirelessly to make money. It?s a good characteristic, but putting yourself into a lot of stress by operating too much might cause your body to break down. You should not only concentrate on building your job but you also need to become sports oriented and keep up with the needs of the physique and mind to become fit. You need to remember that tension can weaken the mind and physique. Exposing yourself to constant stress could avoid you from doing all of your daily routine. Actually when you watch a simple horse racing sport, your body encounters excitement and excitement like it would when you engage in it. It is important to unwind from time to time. Horseracing is a game that can provide a person that watches it a feeling like he?s actually the one riding on the horse. It?s a state that people get into if they want their bet to earn.

This type of game has been around since the ancient times and is still one of the most popular sports today. This kind of game has only already been used to entertain noble families, but now, the game can be watched by people of any kind of social status. This type of sports is so popular because it?s one of the games in which people are permitted to bet. It?s usually situated in a large stadium and can cater to thousands of family and friends. Many people particularly the rich ones, love to bet on their favourite horses and are usually following a system. They use a system that allows them to rule out fragile participants. The system helps them to slim down their choices and increase their probabilities of winning the game. Before the round begins, the bettor chooses his preferred horse; one that runs quick in any given terrain.

There are gambling stations in which gamblers may go to, if they want to wager on their favourite horse. The reason why horse racing in Australia is so well-liked by people is because the federal government created gambling lawful in this country. This type of betting game has been practiced before and is still used in this modern age.

Thread: Spray Booth - Family Woodworking

Once again, another offspring of necessity.

I have two dining room tables to finish this weekend (yes, I know. I've been lax in posting - but I'll put pictures up soon). Hand finishing was not an option because of a time crunch. I'll be spraying ML Campbell Pre-cat lacquer as recommended by Larry. He says its easy and forgiving - both prerequisites for anything I do!

Argentine pres. challenges Harvard questions

(AP) ? In a rare departure from her usual political style, Argentine President Cristina Fernandez responded to questions from an audience at Harvard University Thursday night. But she didn't always answer them.

Fernandez spoke before more than 100 students, faculty and guests at the Kennedy School of Government. In Argentina, she has had five news conferences in five years and has only occasionally taken questions.

Fernandez said the criticism that she doesn't speak to the press is unfounded.

"I don't know where this comes from that I don't talk, that I can't speak, that I'm mute," she said in Spanish which was translated into English.

One student, who is from Argentina, asked Fernandez about Argentines' limited access to foreign capital when they want to travel abroad and increased taxes on credit and debit card purchases made outside the country or online.

"You are here and you are Argentine, so obviously you don't have dollar problems," Fernandez told the student. "You are lucky enough to study in Harvard. You think you can really talk about these currency problems?"

To another student, who asked if it was time for Fernandez to be more self-critical because of her country's escalating crime and what some say is its inflation problem, she said she expected different questions from her Ivy League audience.

Capital flight and wary investors have plagued Fernandez's second term, despite her attempts to use currency controls, taxes on the wealthy and programs for the poor to combat what some analysts have labeled the economy's impending downward economic spiral.

Moody's Investor Service Thursday downgraded 30 Argentine banks to "negative" ratings, down from "stable."

The International Monetary Fund has given Argentina until Dec. 17 to publish accurate inflation statistics, questioning the reported monthly inflation of below 1 percent.

Fernandez succeeded her husband, Nestor Kirchner, as president of Argentina in 2007. He died three years later.

She has been in the U.S. for several days visiting the United Nations. She spoke at Georgetown University on Wednesday.

Foundation works to find common links in cancer between dogs ...

Posted on: 11:37 pm, September 25, 2012, by Dan Daru, updated on: 11:39pm, September 25, 2012

The relationship between man and dog dates back before recorded history. And now there?s a medical relationship to consider.

We share a lot in common. We?re both pack animals, we both hunt, love to play and, unfortunately, we both suffer the same types of cancer.

?Dogs get breast cancer, brain cancer, lymphoma and melanoma. So, 2 million dogs, our foundation, our charter mission is, why?? Pondering that question is founder of 2 million dogs Luke Robinson.

The relatively new study of canine cancer as it relates to humans is called comparative oncology. ?To try to discover that common link in cancer between pets and people,? says Robinson.

2 million dogs founder Luke Robinson says studying this mysterious connection will benefit both man and dog. ?I truly believe that dogs, our canine counter parts, hold the key to the mystery of cancer.?

Breast cancer survivor Wendy England says her dog Daisy, a Rottweiler and Sheppard mix, was aware of Wendy?s cancer before Wendy was diagnosed.

?On the side I had my tumor Daisy would flail and pull away. But on the side that I didn?t, nothing. And I consistently did that until I had my surgery.?

After surgery, Daisy showed no reaction whatsoever to Wendy and Wendy knew she was cancer free. Her doctor confirmed that at a later exam.

?I think they, (dogs), hold the key. And in all respects dogs, we know, can sense cancer in humans. It makes absolute sense,? said Robinson. Robinson hopes to someday unlock this medical mystery between dog, and his best friend, man.

Georgia's richest man runs for country's top job

UREKI, Georgia (AP) ? Georgia's richest man, billionaire and philanthropist Bidzina Ivanishvili seems to have it all ? a head-spinning fortune, the respect of his country and gleaming, art-filled palaces across the globe, including one where zebras and pink flamingoes roam.

What else could he want?

Political power, it turns out, and that has put him on a collision course with President Mikhail Saakashvili ? his onetime friend and ally.

Since announcing his ambitions a year ago, Ivanishvili has been stripped of his Georgian citizenship and hit with fines of tens of millions of dollars. But he is undeterred in leading his Georgian Dream party into parliamentary elections next week that he hopes will make him prime minister, set to become the country's most powerful job after legislative changes next year.

The outcome will have profound consequences for this small but strategically located South Caucasus nation, which has been the West's most loyal ally in a troubled, energy-rich region.

The 56-year-old Ivanishvili, worth an estimated $6.4 billion, was an early supporter of Saakashvili after he came to power following the 2003 Rose Revolution demonstrations that drove out the corruption-riddled regime of Eduard Shevardnadze. But Ivanishvili, who made his fortune in Russia, gradually became disenchanted and began to fear that his disagreements with Saakashvili could imperil his future.

In an interview with The Associated Press, he suggested that his entry into politics was at least partly to shield him from government pressure.

"When you enter politics, it gives you some kind of protection," he said in his residence outside the Black Sea resort of Batumi. But he insists that his rags-to-riches story also points to a deeper drive to help his country: "A smart, gifted person can do things for himself, but also for his friends, for his village, for his country."

Ivanishvili was the youngest of five children in a hilltop village so poor and remote that a rickety old truck brought supplies just once a month. He often had no shoes and dreamt of owning a bicycle. After earning an engineering degree in the capital Tbilisi, he moved to Moscow, where he received a Ph.D. in labor economy.

When Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev launched his perestroika campaign and gradually allowed private entrepreneurship, Ivanishvili and a friend seized the spirit of the times. They began importing personal computers ? rarities in the Soviet Union that cost the equivalent of two or three cars. Sometimes he would approach foreigners at cafes and plead with them to bring computers on their next visit.

In 1990, a year before the Soviet Union collapsed, Ivanishvili and his partners amassed enough money to start a bank, Rossiyskiy Kredit, which became a leading financial institution. Its first office was at a kindergarten, and foreign partners coming for meetings stumbled over miniature toddler toilets. As his bank expanded, Ivanishvili started buying into mining and metals plants across Russia, and then reselling the shares at huge profit.

Skeptics wonder whether it was possible to amass such a fortune honestly, but Ivanishvili insists that he always ran a clean business.

"I never violated any laws," he said. "I never betrayed or deceived anyone."

For years, Ivanishvili was a quiet benefactor of thousands of his impoverished countrymen and also of Saakashvili's government, building schools and hospitals, buying new boots and blankets for the military and, he says, even paying for Saakashvili's inauguration. He also collected art and exotic animals and erected futuristic residences across the country, like a glass-and-steel fortress nestled on a hilltop in the capital Tbilisi.

But Ivanishvili says he broke off ties with Saakashvili after the leader cracked down on opposition protests in 2007, tightened control over media, and Georgia found itself in a brief but disastrous war with Russia in 2008. Saakashvili's government was further tainted in recent days when TV channels funded by Ivanishvili released videos of inmates at a Tbilisi prison being beaten and raped with objects, which sparked angry street protests.

"He has built a tough, authoritarian government while at the same time trying to prove to Europe and America that he is building democracy," Ivanishvili said. "The people have been deceived, including me."

The two men's feud seems highly personal.

Saakashvili denounces Ivanishvili as a Russian stooge, referring to his Georgian Dream coalition as "forces of darkness." The president's camp also accuses Ivanishvili of corrupting Georgian politics and voters with his wealth ? which is equivalent to roughly half of Georgia's GDP.

Ivanishvili, in turn, portrays Saakashvili as a dim-witted former protege who used to call him a "hundred" times a day to ask for advice on running the country.

An August opinion survey by U.S.-based National Democratic Institute suggested that Saakashvili's United National Movement leads the polls with 37 percent support, while Georgian Dream has 12 percent. But Ivanishvili claims he has momentum on his side, with support surging since the release of the prison rape video.

So far Ivanishvili's political career brought him nothing but trouble.

He was stripped of Georgian citizenship a year ago, shortly after he announced his entry into politics. The official reason was that he also had a French passport ? and Georgia prohibits dual nationality. Even though parliament then adopted a law allowing Ivanishvili to run for office as an EU citizen, Ivanishvili said the loss of Georgian citizenship was deeply upsetting, especially considering the $1.5 billion he says he has spent on charity here.

The government then followed by fining him tens of millions of dollars over campaign funding violations, saying that distributing satellite TV dishes and offering a fleet of cars to his party amounts to vote-buying according to recently passed electoral laws that ban corporate donations to parties.

Some observers said the changes were necessary. Others, including Maina Kiai, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights, said the legislation was aimed at preventing "certain individuals" from running in the upcoming vote ? an apparent reference to Ivanishvili.

Ivanishvili bristles at Saakashvili's accusations that if elected he would serve Russia, not Georgia ? calling such suspicions "laughable." Ivanishvili renounced his long-held Russian citizenship before launching his political career and has sold off his Russian assets to sever his financial ties with Moscow. Most of his assets are now in Western banks and about $1 billion in art.

Some experts agree that he's his own man, pointing to the fact that he had funded Saakashvili, the Kremlin's arch-foe, for years.

"All the evidence suggests that he is no one's project but his own," said Thomas de Waal, a Caucasus expert with the Carnegie Endowment. At the same, time the Kremlin is likely to court Ivanishvili, eager to have someone unseat Saakashvili.

Ivanishvili promises aggressive and quick reforms that would strengthen democratic institutions and prompt foreign and local businessmen to invest in the economy. He intends to pursue a pro-Western policy and one day bring Georgia into NATO, while at the same time unfreezing economic ties with Russia ? something he himself acknowledges would be a very complicated task. "You just need to wait for the right time and without doubt improve relations with Russia," Ivanishvili said.

Ivanishvili vows that he will not be corrupted by power, noting that as a businessman he only promoted those who were not afraid to argue with him. But when describing how he would reform Georgia, he revealed some monarchic overtones.

"In such small countries," Ivanishvili said, "everything depends on one person, everyone else follows immediately."

Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit' Trilogy Bypasses Consoles for Mobile ...

When Peter Jackson last ruled Middle-earth, there were two competing The Lord of the Rings game franchises on store shelves. Sierra Entertainment had licensed the books from the Tolkien Estate, while Electronic Arts licensed the movie rights from New Line Cinema. Eventually, EA ended up with the one video game ring to rule them all. These days, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has the rights to both the books and the movies and continues to release new games like the upcoming?LEGO The Lord of the Rings?for all platforms and Guardians of Middle-earth for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

PHOTOS: Meet 'The Hobbit's' Key Characters

A lot has changed in the game industry since Jackson last brought Tolkien?s work to the big screen. These days, there are fewer licensed games for consoles as Hollywood opts for the growing free-to-play online games space, as well as the booming mobile market. That?s exactly the strategy Warner Bros. is taking with The Hobbit.

Massively multiplayer online (MMO) game developer Kabam and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment have partnered to co-publish games for mobile devices and the Web inspired by The Hobbit?Trilogy, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM).

Under the deal, Kabam will develop and operate two multiplayer strategy games, The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth?for mobile devices and?The Hobbit:? Armies of the Third Age?for web browsers, both launching in fall 2012.? Starting Sept. 25, players can sign up to take part in the upcoming beta for?The Hobbit:? Armies of the Third Age.

?The Hobbit?films are among the most anticipated entertainment launches of all time,? said Kevin Chou, CEO, Kabam. ?Kabam?s unique ability to blend the art of game design and the science of free-to-play distribution makes us a natural fit to partner with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment to deliver thrilling games via the Web and mobile devices for?The Hobbit?film fans around the world.?

PHOTOS: Film and TV Actors Who've Starred in Video Games

?We are very pleased to work with Kabam in creating immersive free-to-play online games on massive scales across multiple platforms,? said Greg Ballard, Senior Vice President, Digital Games, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. ?Kabam?s?Armies of the Third Age?and?Kingdoms of Middle-earth?will be an excellent way for?The Hobbit?film fans around the world to delve more into the iconic story and interact with the characters in the universe.?

The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth?is a game for mobile devices that challenges players to build and manage their own kingdom in Middle-earth, joining with other players to explore and engage in epic war.??The Hobbit:? Armies of the Third Age?is a browser-based game that puts gamers at the helm of an army of Elves, Dwarves or Orcs, controlling heroes including Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, in fast-paced strategic combat, with the fate of Middle-earth hanging in the balance.?Both games are free-to-play and will feature iconic locations and characters from? The Hobbit?Trilogy.

There are currently no new announced console games based on the upcoming trilogy in the works. There actually was a game published by Sierra back in 2003 based on The Hobbit novel. It was a kid-focused action game for PC, Xbox, PlayStation 2 and GameCube developed by Inevitable Entertainment.

What's Wrong With Mitt Romney's Personal Brand? | Business 2 ...

On NBC?s ?Meet the Press,? The New York Times? David Brooks shared a historical perspective that puts Mitt Romney in a unique position. The candidate?s unfavorable ratings are 50%, causing Brooks to pronounce Romney: ?the least popular candidate in history.?

David Gregory, host of the show, attempted to define Romney?s personal brand:

?Personally, I think he is a kind, decent man who says stupid things because he?s pretending to be something he?s not, some sort of cartoonish government hater.?

That is perhaps the most generous, if incomprehensible, perspective one could have formed to explain Romney?s personal brand. If Gregory is correct, Romney engineered an inauthentic persona. He chose:

Stupidity. Pretense. Hate. To hide his kindness and decency.

In fact, if you look at both his off the record and on the record appearances, Romney?s authentic personal brand has nearly 50 shades of hate. His personal brand consistently communicates sentiments that reflect disrespect, mockery, disdain, meanness, bullying, cynicism, anger and hostility, among other dark impressions.

This is not the first time we have seen a persona like this in US politics. Romney apes Dick Cheney?s dark side personal brand. But Romney lacks a loveable sidekick like President George W. Bush whose cowboy persona communicated that sure: a sheriff?s in town, but that sheriff is Andy Griffith, this is Mayberry, and Aunt Bea is baking a blue ribbon pie.

We?re seeing venom in Romney?s brand. Or as President Obama said, he ?shoots first and aims later.? This careless but consistent attack pattern could be dangerous in a president.

In May, Romney is caught on camera castigating nearly half of the US people who only pay payroll taxes or sales tax, but not federal income tax. Romney indignant and incredulous, reports that ?these people? feel ?entitled to?. food??

These people include the triple amputee solider who didn?t pay income tax on his combat pay. The elderly retired factory worker who worked 40 years paying into social security and Medicare. The single mother with two kids, working a fulltime retail job and taking an earned income tax credit on her minimum wages.

Even Romney?s humor is mocking and disrespectful.

On April 19 in Pennsylvania, Romney opines to a woman seated next to him at a picnic table at a Pennsylvania reception, ?I?m not sure about these cookies. They don?t look like you made them,? No, no. They came from the local 7-eleven, bakery, or whatever.? Of course, the town?s legendary local baker John Walsh made those cookies for the gathering. Walsh suggested Romney, ?eat cake.?

Review Romney?s ascent into politics and there are dozens and dozens of these mean diatribes, moments and actions. ?Hey, I?m unemployed, too!? he tells a group of unemployed workers.

And who can shake the image that Romney took a family road trip with his crated dog strapped to the top of the car, vomiting?

If there?s anything surprising about Romney?s favorability rating it?s that half the country is good with hate. And, that most of these people are receiving the assistance that prompts Romney to say, ?My job is not to worry about those people. I?ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.? After all the 50% is likely to be in the 99%, not the 1%. But that?s the statistics wonk in me.

This is a personal brand looking to be hired by the American people. Can you imagine speaking the way he does, to your potential employer, investors or employees? And, it?s business that is Romney?s framework. As if we are working out a succession plan, Ann Romney claims on behalf of herself and her husband, ?it?s our turn,? and the dissed and the haves would be lucky to have him ?run the country.?

BTW, in America we say, ?lead the country.?

Buffalo MiniStation Thunderbolt Portable HDD (HD-PA1.0TU3)

The Buffalo MiniStation Thunderbolt Portable HDD (HD-PA1.0TU3) ($229.99 list) is a 1TB portable hard drive aimed squarely at people who have bought a Mac in the last year or so. Its big claim to fame is putting both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt interfaces in one pocketable hard drive. It's a great entry point into Thunderbolt, since it comes with a perfectly sized Thunderbolt cable for laptop users. It also comes with a USB 3.0 cable, so PC users will be able to use the drive's full speed. It's a good in-between for mixed use environments, and will make a great first Thunderbolt hard drive for Mac users trying to find out if Thunderbolt will help them in their day-to-day travels.

Design and Features
The HD-PA1.0TU3 has a matte aluminum body with a frosted white plastic top. The combo looks nice next to the MacBooks and Mac desktops that the drive is aimed at. The drive is truly pocketable, it's approximately 0.75 by 3.5 by 5.25 inches (HWD), and it weighs a little over half a pound. The drive has a laser etched Buffalo logo, but is otherwise minimally unadorned. There's the usual group of certification icons on the bottom with the serial number sticker and a pair of u-shaped rubber feet for stability. The back of the drive has a USB 3.0 micro-b connector plus the mini-DisplayPort shaped Thunderbolt port cut into the metal body. The front has a downward firing white LED, which pulses to show drive activity. The USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt port are protected, so if you plug both USB and Thunderbolt into your Mac, only one interface will be active. This safety feature helps protect your data, since most hard drives aren't designed to react to two simultaneous connections. Speaking of simultaneous connections, it's worth noting that the drive only has one Thunderbolt port, but most desktop-class Thunderbolt drives have two. This means that you can't put the HD-PA1.0TU3 in the middle of the Thunderbolt chain, only at the end.

The drive comes devoid of any software, aside from the PDF manual. This isn't necessarily a knock against the drive, since any Thunderbolt-equipped Mac also has Time Machine backup built into its operating system. You'd need backup software for any Mac built before 2007, but those systems aren't the target of this new drive. Also, if you want a backup plan with more flexibility than Time Machine offers, you'll need to buy another piece of software.

One huge plus for the HD-PA1.0TU3 and its 500GB HD-PA500TU3 brother are that Buffalo includes a shorter Thunderbolt cable along with the usual USB 3.0 cable. The Thunderbolt cable is about 20-inches long, compared to the $49 lengthy 2m (6 foot) cable that Apple sells in their stores. 20-inches is much more reasonable for a pocket drive that you carry in your commuter bag. You will however, pay for the privilege, since there is a price premium for the Thunderbolt drive over a plain USB 3.0 drive.

Performance
The HD-PA1.0TU3 essentially matched or surpassed the performance of the Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt Adapter ($99 list) hooked up to the Seagate GoFlex Pro. The Buffalo drive took a scant 13 seconds to transfer our 1.2GB test folder over Thunderbolt and 43 seconds on USB 2.0. The HD-PA1.0TU3 also was fast using the USB 3.0 interface on a new MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2012), taking 15 seconds to write the folder to the drive. We also got good numbers on the AJA System test, 109.7MB/sec read and 96MB/sec write speeds. This is faster than the Seagate Thunderbolt adapter (100MB/sec read, 90MB/sec write), though much slower than the SSD-equipped LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt (240GB SSD) ($899.99 list, 4 stars) (476MB/sec read, 252MB/sec write) . Basically, the Thunderbolt interface gives you the most speed you can get out of each drive, and more expensive SSD-based drives are faster than spinning hard drives. If you're a video powerhouse, go for the LaCie, but if you've got more pedestrian needs, a spinning drive is sufficient.

We reformatted the HD-PA1.0TU3 with FAT32 so it could work on both Macs and PCs, then we tested the drive with USB 3.0 on PC-based drive tests. The HD-PA1.0TU3 got a 6,048 point score on PCMark05, and 1,374 points on PCMark7. This is a somewhat lower score than our current Editors' Choice for portable hard drives, the Seagate Backup Plus ($139.99 list, 4.5 stars) (6,463 PCMark05, 1,449 PCMark7) . In summation, the HD-PA1.0TU3 is fast enough for a spinning hard drive, to get faster you'll need to trade up to a SSD with Thunderbolt or USB 3.0.

The Buffalo MiniStation Thunderbolt (HD-PA1.0TU3) is a great choice for the commuting Mac user. It would best serve a late model MacBook Air or Pro user with a need for more storage, particularly those users with MacBooks that only have flash storage. It could also serve people that need to bring work home, if the user has an iMac at work and a MacBook Air at home. Thunderbolt really is a great replacement for FireWire on Macs and PCs, though it remains to be seen how many Windows PCs support Thunderbolt in the coming months. The HD-PA1.0TU3 would be our new Editors' Choice if we had a category just for Mac drives. The issue is that new MacBooks now come with USB 3.0, and the price difference between the HD-PA1.0TU3 and our Editors' Choice Seagate Backup Plus is essentially $100. $100 is a lot to spend, even when you consider that the MiniStation includes the Thunderbolt cable. So the Seagate Backup Plus holds on to the Editors' Choice for portable drives, but the MiniStation Thunderbolt comes highly recommended for enthusiast Mac users who want to give Thunderbolt a try.

Obama responds to Romney's tough talk on Mideast

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama, defending his foreign policy record at a time of anti-American rage in the Muslim world, fired back at suggestions from Republican Mitt Romney that the president has been weak with allies and enemies alike.

In an interview airing the night before Obama meets with other world leaders at the United Nations, the president said, "If Gov. Romney is suggesting that we should start another war, he should say so."

It was Obama's most direct rebuttal yet to persistent skepticism by his White House rival on his handling of an unraveling situation in the Middle East. Romney has charged the U.S. stance has been marred by miscalculations, mixed messages and appeasement.

As far back as May, Romney was condemning Obama's response to unrest in Syria, dubbing it a "policy of paralysis" and calling for more assertive measures, such as arming the opposition to Syrian President Bashar Assad. As deadly anti-American protests erupted earlier this month in Libya and elsewhere, Romney sought to undercut what polling shows is a significant foreign policy edge for Obama by calling the president's handling of the situation "disgraceful" and decrying a lack of U.S. leadership in the region.

In a companion interview to Obama's appearance on CBS' "60 Minutes," Romney broadened his reproach to include Israel, criticizing Obama's failure to meet with the U.S. ally's head of state, Benjamin Netanyahu, during the annual U.N. gathering. Romney called it a mistake that "sends a message throughout the Middle East that somehow we distance ourselves from our friends."

The White House has said scheduling precluded a meeting between the two leaders, who won't be in New York at the same time. With the final six weeks of a hard-fought election hanging over the U.N. summit, Obama has opted out of face-to-face meetings with any of his counterparts ? not just Netanyahu ? during his compressed U.N. visit.

But Obama pushed back on the notion that he feels pressure from Netanyahu, dismissing as noise the Israeli leader's calls for the U.S. to lay out a "red line" that Iran's nuclear program mustn't cross to avoid American military intervention.

"When it comes to our national security decisions, any pressure that I feel is simply to do what's right for the American people," Obama said. "And I am going to block out any noise that's out there. "

In a wide-ranging interview conducted the day after U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens was killed in an attack on Benghazi, Obama defended his foreign policy successes, noting he'd followed through on a commitment to end the war in Iraq and had nabbed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

He also waxed optimistic that winning a second term would give him a mandate to overcome obstructionism from congressional Republicans whose No. 1 goal, he said, has been to prevent his re-election.

"My expectation is, my hope is that that's no longer their number one priority," Obama said. "I'm hoping that after the smoke clears and the election season's over that that spirit of cooperation comes more to the fore."

Romney, in an interview conducted last week, sought to deflect attention from his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, over their differences in Medicare policy: "I'm the guy running for president, not him."

While reaffirming his commitment to lowering all income tax rates by 20 percent, Romney expressed no unease about his refusal to offer specifics, such as which loopholes and deductions he'd eliminate to pay for the cuts.

"The devil's in the details. The angel is in the policy, which is creating more jobs," Romney said, adding that he doesn't want to see overall government revenue reduced.

Addressing the seemingly unshakable charge of flip-flopping on policy issues, Romney pointed the finger at Obama, noting his changes of heart on gay marriage and military tribunals for terrorism suspects.

"Have I found some things I thought would be effective turned out not to be effective? Absolutely," Romney said. "You don't learn from experience, you don't learn from your mistakes ?why, you know, you ought to be fired."

The series of interviews also offered glimpses into both candidates' personal habits, including their late-night routines. Romney said his nightly prayer is a time to connect both with the divine and with his own thoughts, and said he asks God mainly for wisdom and understanding.

Obama, describing himself as "a night guy," said that after first lady Michelle Obama and their daughters retire around 10 p.m., he hunkers down for reading, writing and occasionally a moment alone on the Truman Balcony, with the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial in view.

"Those are moments of reflection that, you know, help gird you for the next challenge and the next day," Obama said.

The "60 Minutes" interviews came as Romney's campaign strove to turn the page on a week of public stumbles and Republican hand-wringing, promising a redoubled effort in the most competitive states to undercut Obama's economic record as voters tune in for the final six weeks of a deadlocked race.

A secretly recorded video released last Monday showed Romney writing off his prospects for winning over the almost half of Americans who he said pay no taxes, are dependent upon government and see themselves as victims dominated the week. Ahead of an evening campaign stop at a Denver-area high school Sunday, Romney huddled with senior advisers in Los Angeles to rehearse for the three upcoming presidential debates, which his aides see as the best opportunity to get his campaign and its message back on track.

Amid mounting pressure to spend less time raising money and more time explaining his plans to voters, Romney was refocusing his schedule on the most competitive states. "We're going to keep on campaigning hard," he told reporters Sunday. "I think the fundraising season is probably a little quieter going forward."

Romney blamed Obama's decision to bypass traditional spending limits during the 2008 campaign. "I'd far rather be spending my time out in the key swing states campaigning door to door if necessary, but in rallies and various meetings," he said. "But fundraising is part of politics when your opponent decides not to live by the federal spending limits."

After Colorado, Romney was to begin a three-day bus tour in Ohio on Monday followed by a stop in Virginia ? states that Obama won in 2008 but that Republicans claimed four years earlier.

While national polls remain tight, polls in several of the most closely watched states, including Colorado, suggest Obama has opened narrow leads. Obama won Colorado by 9 points four years ago, but the state went to a Republican in the previous three presidential elections.

Asked Sunday about the poll numbers, Romney replied, "I know that in the coming six weeks they're very unlikely to stay where they are today."

Obama took a rare weekend break from the campaigning ahead of his U.N. address Tuesday, but dispatched top allies to the Sunday talk shows to try to keep Romney's missteps alive in the minds of a dwindling cadre of undecided voters.

The Whyte House was created based on the 4 important education philosophies:-? INTRODUCING, EXPERIMENTING, ENFORCING, and ASSOCIATING. You can read more about their philosophy at THIS FACEBOOK LINK.

This afternoon, the Whyte House will be holding their monthly piano recital at 4.30p.m. My son is one of the performers. :-)

Members of the public are cordially invited to attend this recital today.

The Whyte House believes that learning music helps in the development of a child.? However parents are to focus on examinations and thus do not understand the power and importance of music.

At The Whyte House Music School, the team believe music is more than examinations. They believe that students should be able to perform and express themselves via music.

Their basic philosophy is that music is not a race but rather a journey that should be enjoyed and cherished. Music helps in the development of a persons personality and the effect last a life time (only if it is taught properly).

With such values, the owners of the Whyte House decided to build a concert hall at their Bukit Jambul Kindergarten so that their students will have a venue to perform. With this, they will also be motivated to achieve heights of excellence.

The concert hall is equiped with a grand piano and has a capacity of 70 pax.

If you go to the gym year-round (like me), then the start of the Fall season is a bit dreadful because with it comes an onslaught of fitness neophytes, back from their summer vacations and convinced that this is the year they?re going to get themselves together and look simply incredible. Usually the craze?which is eerily similar to the gym after new years?lightens up after a few weeks, but in the mean time the body sculpting is a high priority. I decided to see which sites were gaining the highest rate of growth in the Health/Fitness/Beauty category for August, and below is the top ten fastest movers.

For all you fad diet lovers, what do you think? Are these fads worth following, or will you stick the more classic methods? And does the South Beach Diet count as a classic method? It?s been around long enough, I?d say, but does the seasonal influx and efflux of traffic to its domain mean it works year-round? Or do people just hit it up when they?re in need of a quick thinspiration? I?m prone to say the later, but that?s just me.

'Kangaroo Care' Positively Impacts Preemies' Brain Development ...

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on September 22, 2012

'Kangaroo Care' Positively Impacts Preemies' Brain Development Kangaroo Mother Care ? in which a premature infant remains in skin-to-skin contact with the parent?s chest rather than being placed in an incubator ? may have lasting positive benefits on brain development, according to a new study.

Researchers at Universit? Laval found that premature infants who benefited from this technique had better brain functioning in adolescence than premature infants placed in incubators.

Earlier research showed that infants born before the 33rd week of pregnancy experienced more cognitive and behavioral problems during childhood and adolescence.

In the new study, researchers compared brain functions of 18 premature infants kept in incubators, 21 held in Kangaroo contact for an average of 29 days, and nine full-term infants.

To assess the brain functions of the children ? now aged 15 ? the researchers used transcranial magnetic stimulation. With this non-invasive and painless technique they could activate brain cells in targeted areas, namely the primary motor cortex that controls muscles.

By measuring muscle responses to the stimulation, they were able to assess brain functions such as the level of brain excitability and inhibition, cell synchronization, neural conduction speed, and coordination between the two cerebral hemispheres.

The researchers found that all brain functions of the adolescent Kangaroo group were comparable to those of the full-term infant group.

On the other hand, premature infants placed in incubators significantly deviated from the other two groups 15 years after their birth, the researchers said.

?Thanks to Kangaroo Mother Care, infants benefited from nervous system stimulation ? the sound of the parent?s heart and the warmth of their body ? during a critical period for the development of neural connections between the cerebral hemispheres,? said neurophysiologist Dr. Cyril Schneider.

?This promoted immediate and future brain development.?

Psychology researcher Dr. R?jean Tessier added that ?infants in incubators also receive a lot of stimulation, but often the stimulation is too intense and stressful for the brain capacity of the very premature.?

?The Kangaroo Mother Care reproduces the natural conditions of the intrauterine environment in which the infants would have developed had they not been born premature. These beneficial effects on the brain are in evidence at least until adolescence and perhaps beyond.?

New Report Shows Plugging in Our Cars Can Significantly Reduce Drivers? Fuel Bills Creating Tens of Thousands of Jobs for California

New Economic Analysis to be Released on Sept. 23 - National Plug In Day Shows Every Dollar Saved at Pump Creates 16 Times More California Jobs

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As California drivers struggle with gasoline prices well over $4 a gallon, and a cumulative $60 billion was spent on gasoline during the past year alone, a new economic research report to be released on National Plug In Day on September 23rd shows that drivers may have another option that's better for the state's economy. The report, commissioned by CalETC, shows that plug-in electric cars can create nearly 100,000 California jobs and provide a powerful local economic stimulus that will benefit people of all incomes whether they drive electric cars or not. The Executive Summary and editorial cartoons (also available in high resolution for print) have been released today and the full report, fact sheet and executive summary will be available on Sunday at www.caletc.com.

?Plug-In electric vehicles stimulate economic growth by promoting transport efficiency, reducing the cost of transportation fuel and saving money for households and enterprises?

?This report shows the economic benefits of electric vehicles can help all Californians since electricity as a transportation fuel is significantly less expensive than gasoline, costing the equivalent of $1.50 per gallon,? says Eileen Tutt, Executive Director, California Electric Transportation Coalition. ?Every dollar saved at the gas pump and spent on other goods and services that households want and need creates 16 times more jobs in the state. Simply put, a dollar saved on gasoline by driving cars fueled by electricity is spent largely in the state economy creating diverse, bedrock local jobs ? and that money keeps circulating in the local economy.?

KEY FINDINGS

  • Electric Vehicles can be a catalyst for economic growth, contributing nearly 100,000 additional jobs by 2030.
  • On average, a dollar saved at the gas pump and spent on the other household goods and services creates 16 times more jobs than a dollar spent on refined petroleum product.
  • Unlike the fossil fuel supply chain, the majority of new demand financed by PEV efficiency savings goes to in-state services, a source of diverse, bedrock jobs.
  • Individual Californians gain from electric car deployment whether they buy new cars or not. Average real wages and employment increase across the economy and incomes grow faster for low- and middle- income groups than for high-income groups.

?Plug-In electric vehicles stimulate economic growth by promoting transport efficiency, reducing the cost of transportation fuel and saving money for households and enterprises,? said the report?s author Dr. David Roland-Holst. ?These savings return as a variety of expenditures that are, on average, more job-intensive and less import dependent than the petroleum fuel supply chain. Consequently, the new expenditures have stronger ?multiplier? effects on state product and create many more jobs than they displace.?

?The average California driver spends $2,400 a year on gasoline. Electricity as a transportation fuel will cut those fuel bills by one third, help families save money while cutting pollution and decreasing our oil dependence. Those are tangible economic benefits for the all Californians.? said Max Baumhefner, Sustainable Energy Fellow at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

To appraise the economic impacts of PEV deployment on the California economy, the report utilizes the Berkeley Energy and Resources (BEAR) model, a general equilibrium model. The BEAR model has been used in numerous instances to promote public awareness and improve visibility for policy makers and private stakeholders. The BEAR model has been peer reviewed and fully documented. The model considers both direct and indirect effects across the economy. This kind of empirical evidence helps to improve the understanding of the many indirect benefits of PEV deployment. While most studies only emphasize the costs and benefits to individuals or families, this one finds the action of accelerating the deployment of PEVs in the light-duty vehicle fleet actually saves money and increases employment overall because the indirect effects are so important.

ABOUT CalETC

CalETC was created over 15 years ago with a charter to promote electric transportation as a means reach the clean air goals in California. We have worked tirelessly to support all forms of electric transportation. Over the last 15 years electric off-road equipment has become commonplace with forklifts, airport equipment, lawn equipment and other types of off-road equipment transitioning to clean electricity. This transition has resulted in significantly lowering the use of petroleum in these various categories, paving the way for the next wave of on-road large-scale deployment of electric vehicles. With every major auto maker announcing production or upcoming production of some manner of electric vehicle, California is poised to continue to lead the transition of the transportation sector away from petroleum and toward electricity. CalETC will continue to support all aspects of the transition to electric transportation, working closely with our government, environmental, and industry partners to ensure success.

China to protesters: 'Please express your patriotism in a rational and orderly fashion'

Chinese protesters followed the rules on Tuesday, obediently forming small groups and awaiting their turn to march past the Japanese embassy to express anger over disputed islands.

By Peter Ford,?Staff writer / September 18, 2012

A demonstrator shouts slogans during a protest in front of a Chinese national flag on the 81st anniversary of Japan's invasion of China, in Shanghai, Sept. 18. Anti-Japan protests reignited across China on Tuesday, the emotional anniversary marking Tokyo's occupation of its giant neighbor, escalating a maritime dispute which has forced major Japanese brandname firms to suspend business there.

It was an SMS from the Beijing police. Barely had I arrived in the vicinity of the Japanese embassy, the target of a fourth day of protests over a territorial dispute, than the message popped up on my screen.

?The Beijing Public Security Bureau reminds you to please express your patriotism in a rational and orderly fashion and to follow police instructions. Thank you for your cooperation,? it read.

The Chinese government was clearly anxious that Tuesday?s demonstrations, marking the anniversary of the incident that sparked Japan?s 1931 occupation of Northeastern China, should not turn violent, as had happened over the weekend.

The protesters, mostly young men, many waving red and gold Chinese flags or portraits of Mao Zedong, were doing as they were told by organizers. Obediently they formed up in small groups and awaited their turn to march past the embassy, where they slowed down just long enough to throw bottles of water at the gates.

Any hotheads in the crowd who might have wanted to do more were dissuaded by the sight of helmeted riot police standing shoulder to shoulder along the roadside, reinforcing thousands of police officers who were making sure, megaphones in hand, that everybody kept moving. Also reinforcing the police were civilian security volunteers wearing armbands, and reinforcing them were dayglo-orange-waistcoated traffic wardens.

Then the protesters marched on down the street in glorious late summer sunshine, chanting slogans such as ?Japanese dogs out of China,? or ?China wake up,? and even reminding themselves, in unison, to ?listen to orders.??

A block down the street they turned around, marched back down the way they had come, then turned around once more and started all over again.

?I?ve been round three times already and I won?t go home until everybody else does,? said Zhang Chong, a young clothes vendor, his cheek decorated with a Chinese flag decal.

?We didn?t lose the Diaoyu islands in Mao Zedong?s time and we will not allow them to be lost by our generation,? Mr. Zhang said, explaining why he had taken to the streets.

The worst outbreak of anti-Japanese sentiment for many years was sparked last week when the Japanese government bought three of the uninhabited islands in the East China Sea known here as the Diaoyu and in Japan as the Senkaku. China claims sovereignty over the islands, which are under Japanese control and were privately owned until last week.

The Chinese government responded by fiercely denouncing the purchase, formally specifying the geographical coordinates of the waters that it claims around the islands, sending surveillance vessels to the islands and sanctioning anti-Japanese demonstrations around the country, some of which torched Japanese-owned businesses on Saturday.

Nothing like that was to be allowed on Tuesday, it was clear. As the protesters approached the Japanese embassy, a loudspeaker mounted on a police car played them a tape loop: ?The Chinese government shares the people?s feelings? a woman?s voice assured them. ?The government has made it clear it will not accept any territorial infringement. But once you have expressed yourself, please move on.?

Fed's Lockhart - slow progress on jobs "call to action"

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank President Dennis Lockhart said slowing U.S. economic growth, a stagnating labor market, and a belief that monetary policy could boost jobs convinced him to throw his weight behind the central bank's latest stimulus.

In the leadup to last week's Federal Open Market Committee's policy meeting, Lockhart had said he was undecided on whether more easing was needed.

"I concluded that there was indeed a call to action falling out of the discouraging conditions of slowing growth and still high unemployment with meager recent progress in bringing it down," Lockhart told the Institute of Internal Auditors on Friday.

U.S. unemployment registered 8.1 percent last month, and has stayed above 8 percent for more than three years.

Although there is still a debate raging over whether the root problems in the jobs market are beyond the power of the Fed, he said, "I have been persuaded that the problem is, to a significant enough extent, one of weak growth that can be ameliorated by prudent monetary policy actions."

The Fed last week embarked on a bold new effort to help a faltering recovery, buying $40 billion of mortgage backed securities each month and promising not to let up on asset purchases until the labor market improves substantially.

It also said it will keep rates low for a considerable period after the economy strengthens, much like - in the words of New York Fed Bank President William Dudley - pushing a stalled car even after it has been freed from the mud to make sure it continues to roll forward.

Interest rates will likely stay extraordinarily low until at least mid-2015, the Fed said. On Thursday one top Fed policymaker went farther: rates should stay low, Minneapolis Fed President Narayana Kocherlakota said, until unemployment reaches the near-normal level of 5.5 percent, as long as the outlook for inflation stays below 2.25 percent.

Lockhart, unlike Kocherlakota, has a vote on the Fed's policy-setting panel this year, did not agree.

"I am not so sure that it will not be appropriate to begin the process of tightening and normalization before we get to what we would consider to be full employment," Lockhart told reporters after the speech.

An unemployment rate of 7 percent to 7.5 percent, "and possibly lower," would be a sign of good progress, he said.

And if things do not improve, the Fed could still do more, Lockhart said on Friday, citing the Fed's statement from last week.

"I think you can infer that that's a reference to possibly a renewal of Treasury purchases," he said. "Should that be done now? No, not now."

Although the new program carries some risk of sparking inflation, he told the audience after his speech, those risks are "manageable," and he is confident the Fed will know the appropriate moment to start raising historically low rates - near zero since December 2008 - to normal.

The Fed's decision to buy mortgage-backed securities in its latest round of stimulus, known as quantitative easing, was well-timed because the housing market has begun to improve, reducing one headwind to economic growth, he said.

If U.S. lawmakers effectively deal with the so-called fiscal cliff - the raft of tax increases and spending decreases slated to go into effect at the end of this year-- and if Europe's debt crisis abates, two more headwinds will also be softened, he said.

Still, he said, monetary policy has its limits.

"I am not expecting miracles," he said.

Baxter: An industrial robot that anyone can use

19 hrs.

The robots that fill factories and put together cars are dangerous, difficult to operate and out of date, says Rodney Brooks, cofounder of iRobot and now Rethink Robotics. He's building a better one ? one that can work with and be operated by normal humans.

Brooks studied and taught robotics and artificial intelligence for many years at MIT. He and some colleagues eventually founded iRobot, creators of the popular Roomba vacuum robot, and also maker?of many military and industrial devices. His new company, Rethink Robotics, aims to revolutionize the industrial robots that work in factories around the world. Rethink and Brooks are profiled in a recent article at MIT's Technology Review.

Brooks?points out that the robots that assist workers are generally just not very worker-friendly. They can't be reprogrammed except by specialists, they're constructed for single tasks and they are often dangerous to be around. For instance, many have cages around them for safety purpose since they will operate regardless of human presence ? such as someone's hand in their work area.

He decided to build a robot that was the opposite of all this, and the result, still experimental but already promising, is called "Baxter." It's meant not to be a heavy-duty device for superhuman tasks, but rather a helper for the average line worker. It stands about 6?feet tall, has two flexible arms with grippers?and is topped by a face, displayed on an LCD screen.

One might question the relevance of a face on a robot. But it's not just there to make Baxter look friendly. It's functional, with the eyes looking toward?where the robot is going to be working, or otherwise indicating how it is working.

Its powerful arms also have a human touch ? literally. Not only can they sense obstacles and accommodate them, but they can be easily moved around by hand. In fact, Baxter can be trained to do new actions just by moving its arms to the correct position and choosing an action. This way, any worker can make the robot useful to themselves or adjust its actions to suit a new environment.

Perhaps most importantly, Baxter fits roughly into a human-sized space and can perform common tasks that once were too trivial for automation ? tasks like adding instruction manuals to boxes,?now done by poorly?paid workers. For an estimated cost of $22,000, a tireless and efficient worker can do the job instead.

Naturally, the objection arises that automation like this eliminates jobs. But Brooks points out that a robot like Baxter makes human workers more efficient and more valuable, not less. And while automation does inevitably replace some workers, that's true of many advances in technology that are a net benefit: many appliances, tools and Internet services used to be humans as well. Remember travel agents?

Brooks isn't sure what Baxter or its descendants will be used for, but he thinks that the empowerment of the average worker will be not just a benefit but a revolution:

I think we're going to see people take this robot, program it to do stuff that we never thought of, never imagined. Out of that will come some new applications that we didn't even consider. And then it gets really exciting.
