New Facebook browser plug-in keeps you constantly connected

46 min.

Do you always have a Facebook tab open? This plug-in for Firefox might save you valuable browser space. You can get your notifications and chat without ever actually opening the Facebook website.

Mozilla, creators of the popular Web browser Firefox, have been working on integrating more social features into the browser itself, rather than letting them sit inside Web apps and tabs. The first official product of this effort is the Facebook Messenger plug-in, which adds chat, notifications, and your activity feed into the normal interface?of your browser.

People who like to stay logged into Facebook throughout the day will appreciate not having to keep an extra tab open, although power users may regret having to surrender permanent space on their screen for social functions.

The "Social API," of which this plug-in is just a part, could lead to many more types of permanent social add-ons. Collaboration in a work chatroom or monitoring of your Twitter feed could be possible, or the sidebar could recommend the page you're on to friends.

Privacy-minded folks will probably prefer to keep their social connections bottled up inside the Facebook website, but more social types can test out the plug-in here.

Facebook users will also be glad to know that an update to the iOS app has been approved, adding an improved photo upload process and a few other features. Check out the changes and get the update in the Apple App Store.

Tips To Make Your Commercial Real Estate ... - Overseas Property

Getting involved in commercial real estate transactions is sometimes overwhelming, and both beginners and veterans will find it stressful at times. The following article will enable you to make informed decisions about commercial real estate, from the very beginning to end.

Standard release forms are not something you should rush to sign. Large real estate companies have been known to hide clauses that are not advantageous to you in their very long, and complicated, leases. Only by going through the document with care can you prevent the potential pains and aches that you can get from standard commercial lease paperwork.

At first, you may be required to spend a significant amount of time on a commercial investment. It can take a little time to find a property worth purchasing, and you also may have to make necessary repairs. Do not become discouraged due to the time-consuming nature of this process. Later, you?ll be rewarded for the time and money you have invested.

When you are buying commercial real estate, find some opportunities that will let you buy a bigger building. Often, it is equally expensive to maintain either a small or large property. As a result, you are able to achieve an economy of scale.

Experts recommend not purchasing unit blocks that have fewer than 10 units in them. This is because they can be more difficult to manage than smaller properties. Each situation is different; however, the research about a particular property will govern your decision.

If you plan to finance your next commercial real estate purchase, you should first ensure that you can provide detailed financial statements for prospective lenders. If you don?t have them, you won?t be able to prove fiscal responsibility to the lenders, and it?s likely that you won?t get the financing you need.

The area in which the property is located is important. In general, it?s better to locate a business in a richer area because rich customers obviously have more discretionary income. If your product or service tends to appeal primarily to lower or middle class consumers, look for commercial property in a more conservative neighborhood.

When thinking about financing for properties of a commercial nature, it is important to go over paperwork with a reputable real estate attorney. You will want and need the best advice should anything go wrong in your real estate investments.

Searching for commercial properties can be stressful for experts developers and beginners alike. In this article, you will find plenty of tips and tricks to give you an enjoyable and easy search for the commercial property you need.

NYC Marathon is canceled following storm damage

(AP) ? Gisela Clausen delivered the news to her fellow runners from Germany as they walked into the New Yorker Hotel.

"We spend a year on this. We don't eat what we want. We don't drink what we want. And we're on the streets for hours. We live for this marathon," she said, "but we understand."

Mayor Michael Bloomberg reversed himself Friday and yielded to mounting criticism that this was no time to run the New York City Marathon: runners were ready but weary residents were still recovering from a monster storm named Sandy.

And just like that, the race was scrapped.

Bloomberg, who as late as Friday afternoon insisted the world's largest marathon should go on as scheduled Sunday, changed course shortly afterward amid intensifying opposition from the city comptroller, the Manhattan borough president and sanitation workers unhappy they had volunteered to help storm victims but were assigned to the race instead. The mayor said he would not want "a cloud to hang over the race or its participants."

"I'm shocked," said Clausen, who is from Munich. "Not at the situation, but at how short this decision is (in) coming."

Like Clausen, many of the runners understood the rationale behind the decision. The death toll in the city stood at 41 and thousands of people were shivering without electricity, making many New Yorkers recoil at the idea of police officers protecting a foot race and evicting storm victims from hotels to make way for runners.

But the suddenness of it all forced runners to deal with an unexpected twist: What to do with no race.

Nearly 40,000 athletes ? well over half from out of town ? were expected at the Staten Island start line on Sunday. Their entry fees were paid. Their airline tickets were purchased. Their friends and family had hotel rooms. And all week the race was a go ? even after Sandy came ashore Monday and ripped up everything in its path.

"I understand why it cannot be held under the current circumstances," Meb Keflezighi, the 2009 men's champion and 2004 Olympic silver medalist, said in a statement. "Any inconveniences the cancellation causes me or the thousands of runners who trained and traveled for this race pales in comparison to the challenges faced by people in NYC and its vicinity."

The cancellation means there won't be another NYC Marathon until next year.

"We cannot allow a controversy over an athletic event ? even one as meaningful as this ? to distract attention away from all the critically important work that is being done to recover from the storm and get our city back on track," Bloomberg said.

The nationally televised marathon had been held annually since 1970, including 2001, about two months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The 26.2-mile race had been scheduled to start in Staten Island, one of the storm's hardest-hit places, and wind through all of the city's five boroughs with 2 million spectators usually lining the route.

In Staten Island, Cynthia Spinner said, "Thank God, thank God," when she heard the marathon was canceled.

"More for our people in New York," she said. "They shouldn't take their police or ambulance services off of what they're doing now to go for the marathon. People need homes. They're in hotels; they need everything right now."

Across the metro area Friday, the recovery made slow progress. Companies turned the lights back on, and many employees returned to their desks. Many major retailers also reopened.

But patience was wearing thin among New Yorkers who had been without power for most of the week.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo told utilities to step up power repair work or risk losing business in the state. And officials said the cost of the storm could exceed $18 billion in New York alone.

From storm-scarred New Jersey to parts of Connecticut, a widespread lack of gasoline frustrated people who were just trying to get to work or pick up a load of groceries.

Lines of cars, and in many places queues of people on foot carrying bright red jerry cans, waited for hours for precious fuel. And those were the lucky ones. Other customers gave up after finding only closed stations or dry pumps marked with yellow tape or "No Gas" signs.

Bloomberg called the marathon an "integral part of New York City's life for 40 years" and insisted that holding the race would not require resources to be diverted from the recovery effort. But, he said, he understood the doubts.

City and race officials considered several alternatives: a modified course, postponement or an elite runners-only race. But they decided cancellation was the best option.

Organizers will donate various items that had been brought in for the race to relief efforts, from food, blankets and portable toilets to generators already set up on Staten Island.

Mary Wittenberg, president of the New York Road Runners, the group that organizes the marathon, said canceling was the right move.

"This is what we need to do and the right thing at this time," she said.

"It's been a week where we worked very closely with the mayor's office and felt very strongly, both of us together, that on Tuesday, it seemed that the best thing for New York on Sunday would be moving forward. As the days went on, just today it got to the point where that was no longer the case."

Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association ? the police department's largest union ? called the decision to cancel the marathon "a wise choice."

"When you have a significant amount of people voicing real pain and unhappiness over its running, you have to hear that. You have to take that into consideration," said Howard Wolfson, deputy mayor for government affairs and communications.

"Something that is such a celebration of the best of New York can't become divisive," he said. "That is not good for the city now as we try to complete our recovery effort, and it is not good for the marathon in the long run."

ING, the financial company that is the title sponsor of the marathon, said it supported the decision to cancel. The firm's charitable giving arm has made a $500,000 contribution to help with relief and recovery efforts and is matching employee donations. Sponsor Poland Spring said it would donate the bottled water earmarked for the marathon to relief agencies, more than 200,000 bottles.

Race organizers had been expecting about 47,500 runners before the storm.

For now, they are sticking to their policy of no refunds for runners, but they will guarantee entry to next year's marathon or the half-marathon in March. However, Wittenberg said the group would review the refund policy.

Steve Brune, a Manhattan entrepreneur, was set to run his fourth New York City Marathon.

"I'm disappointed, but I can understand why it's more important to use our resources for those who have lost a lot," he said.

Nikki Davies arrived from London on Friday, eager to race.

"I can understand not wanting to run through devastated parts of the city," she said. "I thought if they cancel it, they'd cancel it earlier."

Now, she had 10 days to fill. On her agenda?

"A lot of sightseeing," she said.

Tips On How To Effectively Improve Your House - Home ...

Home improvement can be a daunting task, especially when you've never done it before. Regardless, it's an essential part of being a homeowner. If you find yourself in the position of needing to do some home improvement and not knowing where to begin, or if you have run out of ideas, this article is for you.

?

Update the lighting in your home to add brightness. Changes in lighting fixtures and adding additional wall lighting can bring a entirely new look to your home. Buy energy saving bulbs to reduce your overall energy costs and consider investing in a smart lighting system that will automatically turn off lights when not in use.

?

An easy change that you can make in your kitchen is to change the faucet on your sink. Home improvement stores now have a wide selection of faucets from which you can choose from. You can, typically, install the new faucet yourself within a few minutes.

?

A great home improvement tip that will give a great feel to your home is to place wooden panels all throughout your living room. This will give your living room an extra homey feel, and you'll find yourself wanting to spend even more time in front of your television set.

?

To make sure that you're always getting the most out of your air conditioning units, always remember to clean those filters. Especially if you have a large central machine attached to the home, it's vital that the filter remains clean so that the machine doesn't have to work too hard and burn itself out prematurely.

One energy-efficient improvement you can make to your home is to replace your windows. Older-style single-panel windows don't insulate the inside of your home nearly as well as the newer double-panel style. New windows will increase the aesthetic beauty of your home while saving you money each month in electricity bills.

?

Having new windows installed in your home can be very beneficial. Old windows often do not have a tight seal and allow heat and air to escape, causing an increase in your monthly electric bill. Double pane, vinyl windows are a great choice. Not only do they make your home more energy efficient, but they are easy to clean and increase your home's value.

?

New Windows

?

To increase energy efficiency and save significantly on your utility bills, consider replacing single pane windows with newer energy efficient ones. The investment you make in new windows now will easily pay for itself over time as your utility bills will be lower and, of course, your home will be more comfortable.

?

Are your windows outdated? Do they provide the right insulation? Maybe one or two of them are cracked or perhaps the style and design just doesn't fit the times anymore. Updating to new windows improves the beauty of your home as well as the value. Consider getting new windows if it is time.

?

?

Secure your windows from potential burglars with nails! All you have to secure your windows is partially drive a nail in the inside of the sash on both sides of the window just above the bottom panel. You can make the nail removable by drilling the hole instead of driving the nail in. Allow the nail to protrude over the bottom panel so that it can't be opened without removing the nail.

?

Now that you know how easy it can be to improve your home with simple do it yourself projects, why wait? Start today using the advice you found in this article. You can enjoy transforming your home. It's easy once you know what needs to be done, and how to do it!

SKM success in South America recognised by Business Excellence ...

ronspence.jpgEngineering and project delivery company, Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) has won an Australia-Latin America Business Excellence Award in recognition of the?its growth in South America over the past 14 years. It is the second time that SKM has been recognised with an award by the Australia-Latin America Business Council, having received the Export Award for SKM Minmetal in 2007.

SKM?s business in South America has grown significantly since the company first started investigating opportunities in the region in 1998. Activities in South America are now integral to SKM?s global business and represent 8.6% of total SKM revenue. Since 2004, when SKM employed 12 people in Chile and had revenue of A$4.5 million, staff numbers have expanded to 900 with revenue growing to A$108 million. In the past year alone, SKM?s South American business has experienced an almost 20% increase in revenue.

SKM now has offices in Lima, Peru; Bogota, Colombia and Belo Horizonte, Brazil, as well as a purpose-built, 14-storey office tower in Santiago, Chile. Services have expanded to include water, environmental, power, energy and infrastructure, as well as mining capabilities, and plans are underway for further expansion in terms of geography, client base and capabilities. CEO Santo Rizzuto said the firm experienced a major boost over the past year, with the acquisition of leading Chilean water consultancy, IRH. ?Now with some 90 environmental and water specialists, SKM recently signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Chilean Government which will involve the transfer of technology and knowledge on water management to Chilean professional teams,? Rizzuto said.

?We have also added power and energy capabilities to our skill mix in South America, with the business now providing services in hydro technology, power for mining projects, transmission and generation, as well as supporting SKM?s global geothermal business. Our building and infrastructure capabilities are also further developing to support mining clients in terms of maritime, rail and non-process infrastructure, as well as providing specialist seismic engineers to SKM?s operations in Christchurch, to assist with the post-earthquake restorations,? Rizzuto said. While providing specialist study and engineering services, SKM?s capabilities in major project delivery have also grown in the region. Five major capital projects have been delivered in the past four years - the most, in terms of number, across SKM?s operational areas.

DETROIT A new book that delves into the unexpected properties of life at the nanoscale was released this week by Basic Books. "Life's Ratchet: How Molecular Machines Extract Order from Chaos," by Peter M. Hoffmann, Ph.D., professor of physics and materials science and associate dean in Wayne State University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, uses the principles of physics the science of levers and pulleys, atoms and quarks to explain life.

Hoffmann explores at the nanoscale how the cells in the human body come to life. At this scale, the energy of the random motions of atoms can move molecules, initiate chemical reactions or create voltages, allowing for the existence of independently moving nanoscale machines. According to Hoffmann, the complex molecules of human cells can be called "molecular machines," or "nanobots."

"These machines, unlike any other, work autonomously to create order out of chaos," said Hoffmann. "Life emerges from the random motions of atoms molecular storms filtered through the sophisticated structures of our evolved machinery. As we enter the microscopic world of life's molecules, we find that chaos, randomness, chance and noise are our allies."

According to Hoffmann, to make the molecular storm a useful force for life, it needs to be harnessed and tamed by physical laws and sophisticated structures.

"Thanks to nanotechnology, we can now see the smallest parts of life at work: autonomously moving molecules performing specific tasks like tiny robots," said Hoffmann. "Our cells are cities full of molecular-sized worker bees who built themselves, go where they are needed, do what they need to do and are recycled again."

Hoffmann, an expert on the latest advances in nanoscience, is the founding director of Wayne State's biomedical physics program. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award, the WSU Department of Physics' Richard J. Barber Faculty Award and many others.

Nuclear planners visit Anglesey

Officials from Japanese firm Hitachi will visit Anglesey later after taking over a project to build a new nuclear power station on the island.

The Horizon development aims to build a ?8bn replacement for the Wylfa plant.

Up to 6,000 jobs could be created while the new reactors are built.

The officials will meet local groups and politicians in Llangefni after the announcement of the ?700m deal which includes a plan to build a nuclear station at Oldbury, Gloucestershire.

Wylfa was one of a number of sites which was shortlisted for a new nuclear power station last year, to replace its ageing Magnox reactor.

But in March this year, the two German companies behind the project - E.ON and RWE - announced they were pulling out.

They blamed the global economic crisis and Germany's decision to phase out nuclear power in the aftermath of the Fukushima accident in Japan.

There is some opposition to nuclear power on Anglesey and there is likely to be controversy as other countries reconsider their nuclear power plans in the light of Fukushima.

'Excellent news'

Welsh Secretary David Jones called it a "huge boost" while First Minister Carwyn Jones said it was "very good news for Wales and the UK".

Richard Foxhall, the stakeholders relations manager for Horizon, told BBC Radio Wales that workers welcomed the news.

"Since the announcement yesterday, for myself and for my colleagues in Horizon we are absolutely over the moon because we don't have to go looking for new jobs," he said.

"It was seen very much as a going concern and the work that's been put in by our staff really made sure that we were a good asset to put on the market.

"We are all absolutely delighted by the result."

He added that the workforce was "bursting" to find out the plans for the future.

Anglesey council leader Bryan Owen said the deal was a "massive boost" to the island's economy and that of north Wales, while local MP Albert Owen said it was "an important step forward".

However, there will be a gap of several years between the old plant stopping producing electricity and the new one becoming operational.

The existing Wylfa plant, which has been producing energy since 1971, is set to continue generating electricity until the fuel runs out or September 2014, whichever comes first.

The Horizon project under E.ON and RWE expected Wylfa B to start producing electricity around 2020 but Hitachi's plans now mention "the first half of the 2020s".

Pets Take on Stairs in Adorable Videos

Aside from being ridiculously adorable, our pets offer up some pretty funny entertainment. For starters, they casually hang out for photo shoots?and?sneeze to the beat of Dubstep. Basically, if there?s a cute behavior to be documented, you can be sure we?re on it!

Well folks, we?ve stumbled upon a lesser-known realm?in the world of animal amusement? their attempts at going down stairs. Some are super skilled while others are extra weary of tackling the challenge.?There?s also those flat-out lazy few who just flop down the stairs, which bears a striking resemblance to us on Monday mornings. But regardless, all are adorably hilarious!

From aww-worthy pug puppies to miniature pigs named Hamlet, check out the best of animals vs. stairs.
